After many months of decline India's polished exports finally increased in February 2016 by 2%, to $ 2.33 billion, versus $ 2.29 billion in February 2015. The Indian diamond industry, hard hit by the fall in activity in the world of consumer markets, has finally begun to show signs of recovery.
By volume, polished exports amounted to 3.28 million carats against 3.03 million carats a year earlier. This is evidenced by the preliminary data of the Council to promote the export of gems and jewelery (Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, GJEPC).
Since the beginning of the financial year (April-February) diamond exports fell to $ 18.1 billion, compared with $ 21.4 billion for the same period of the previous year, which represents a decrease of 15%.
Polished exports during this period also decreased and the volume to 29.47 million carats to 31.70 million carats in the same period of the previous year.
Rough imports rose 37% to $ 1.54 billion in February 2016, compared to $ 1.12 billion in February 2015. By volume diamond imports increased to 15.6 million carats against 11.39 million carats in the same period last year.
Meanwhile, during the period from April to February 2016 imports of diamonds into India declined by 17.2% to $ 12.65 billion from $ 15.28 billion in the same period last year. The volume of imports during this period also fell to 132.40 million carats to 123.40 million carats.
Rough diamond exports from India grew by 49% in February 2016, to $ 130.8 million, versus $ 87.8 million a year earlier. By volume, the figure was 4.61 million carats against 2.27 million carats last year.
From April to February 2016 diamond exports amounted to $ 1 billion against $ 1.2 billion in the same period last year, a decrease of 19.8%. The volume of diamond exports fell by 19% during this period, with 29.89 million carats to 27.42 million carats.
Polished diamond imports to India decreased in February 2016 by 45.2% to $ 222.1 million from $ 405.3 million in February 2015. However, from April to February, this figure fell to 58.8%, from $ 6.1 billion last year to $ 2.5 billion this year.
Decrease in this indicator has a positive effect on the cutting and polishing factories in India, which and so has to reduce production capacity. The government sought to reduce the import of diamonds to support the cutting and polishing sector in India.
