A fantasy red diamond weighing 1.56 carats, called Argyle Phoenix, was sold at a record price per carat of diamonds produced from diamonds mined at the Argyle mine, Smh.com.au reports.
Rio Tinto sold a rare diamond for a record $ 2 million in a tender for pink diamonds, which featured 64 precious stones - pink, red and blue diamonds. Following the auction, Rio recorded several records, in particular, the red diamond Argyle Phoenix was sold at the highest price for the diamond produced at the Argyle mine in the Kimberley region of Western Australia in the history of production.
In addition, the auction received a record number of rates in excess of $ 1 million.
"We are very pleased with the results of the sale of the 2013 diamond collection that reflect the rarity, provenance and global importance of these precious stones," said Rio-Tinto Diamonds managing director Jean-Marc Lieberherr.
Many diamonds were sold at a price higher than the pre-auction estimate, which reflects the growing demand from the world's leading jewelers, designers and collectors.
As a result of bidding, all 64 lots were sold.
"Among the buyers of diamonds were representatives of both traditional and emerging markets," Rio said.
